What Are the Symptoms of Anxiety?

Recognizing anxiety is fairly easy.

We all feel anxious from time to time throughout our lives. That anxiety is usually short term – lasting a day or less – or mid-term – lasting several days or weeks during a normally stressful period. Anxiety is a normal thing in life. It is part of our “fight or flight” response system, and when a situation occurs that stresses us, we feel anxious.

But anxiety is not always normal. You may feel anxious and discover that there is actually nothing to be anxious about in your life at the moment. If this is a problem that persists, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder.  If your anxiety is constant, to the point where it is consuming your life – it is a problem. This type of anxiety could even cause you to fear certain situations, which in turn causes you to isolate yourself.

Note that feeling anxious and having an anxiety or panic attack is in fact, two different things. If you feel anxious, you may be worried or even feel fearful.

However, when you are having an anxiety attack, there are physical symptoms that you will have along with it, such as:

1.  Being short of breath
2.  Chest pain
3.  Shaking or trembling
4.  Pounding heart or palpitations
5.  Dizziness
6.  Nausea
7.  Hot or cold flashes

Along with worry and fear, if you feel these symptoms, you may think that you have a heart attack. You may even fear that you are going to die. While all of this is terribly scary, and treatment should be sought, the good news is that nobody has ever died from an anxiety attack. People do, however, die of a heart attack, which has similar symptoms, mistakenly thinking it is a panic attack.

The best thing to do, if you are feeling anxious, is to seek treatment for the anxiety before you suffer an anxiety attack. Treatment for anxiety is twofold – treating the mental state as well as treating the physical state.

Different Types of Anxiety

There are different types of anxiety

When you think about anxiety, you may not realize that there are different types of anxiety. The most common types of anxiety include social anxiety, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and generalized anxiety. So, what do they all mean?

Social Anxiety is anxiety or feelings of anxiety that occur either in a social situation, or in anticipation of a social situation. If social anxiety is not effectively dealt with, it can become a problem. Especially if it allows persons suffering from anxiety attacks are allowed to put themselves in feared social situations.

Panic Disorder exists when a person suffers from panic attacks or from feelings of intense fear for no obvious reason. The symptoms of a panic attack may be extremely tough, and the person may even think that they have a heart attack.
It is essential to note that one cannot die from a panic attack, even though they may feel that they are actually dying. With panic disorder, one might fear having a panic attack to the point of causing one.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSDPost Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs when one has experienced something traumatic. This usually does not happen immediately after the event. It could happen days, weeks, months, or even years after the trauma has been experienced. The person may experience flashbacks of trauma, and this can prevent one from living a normal life.

Phobias involve many different things. One might fear spiders, snakes, water, heights, driving, or any number of things. The fear that one feels, however, is not normal in that it is often highly elaborate. This does not mean that the person is exaggerating the fear that they feel. In fact, the fear that they feel is absolutely real — to them.
Phobias tend to make people avoid things in life that they may otherwise enjoy. For example, one might fear spiders to the extent that they would never take a walk on a wooded path, where spiders might exist.

Finally, we have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. Some people feel that this is what is diagnosed when there is no other cause for anxiety found; however, that is not the case. GAD occurs when one is constantly worried about every aspect of their life. It can be seriously disabling. People who suffer from GAD worry about themselves, their family, their friends, and the whole world.

If you’ve been having feelings of anxiety or anxiety attacks, it is necessary to seek treatment and to determine what type of anxiety you have, so the cause can be found, and treatment can be administered.

Causes of Depression

Anxiety can also bring on depression.

For some people, the depression can become quite serious while it for others has a reasonable cause and passes without seeking treatment. But because we are all unique, the causes of depression are widely varied. What depresses some may not adversely affect someone else.

There are numerous treatments available for depression, and these treatments will most likely help you. However, the surest treatment for depression is finding the cause and dealing with that underlying problem. Finding the problem, however, may not be easy for some.

Many things in life that will naturally cause depression. For example, grief is a form of depression, and it is perfectly normal. However, if the symptoms of depression — even in times of grief — start interfering with your life, a problem may exist. Typically with grief, the feeling of loss and sadness may continue for an extended period of time. However, those feelings should not interfere with your day-to-day life.

Financial problems may also cause depression, as well as marital problems. However, not all depression is caused by life events. Sometimes depression has a physical underlying problem. This may be an illness or another health problem, but it could also be a chemical imbalance that can easily be corrected with medication.

Also note the risk factors associated with depression. These include a family history of depression, a serious life event, stress, abuse, or death or illness of a loved one.

Again, the causes of depression are numerous and varied, but seeking treatment and finding the cause is half the battle. Sometimes, it is the entire war because once the problem is identified; it can be more easily dealt with.

Causes of Anxiety

Anxiety can even be caused by anxiety.

Whether you have suffered from anxiety or not, you may wonder what the exact causes of anxiety are. The fact is that there are two possible types of causes of anxiety. The first is biological, and the second is emotional.

Anti AnxietyA biological source of anxiety is essentially a chemical imbalance. This means that the brain may be producing too much or not enough of certain chemicals or hormones. This imbalance can be caused by many things. It may be caused by medication that you are taking; it may be inherited through blood lines, or it may be caused by an illness, a surgery, or any number of things.

Emotional causes of anxiety can also be several. However, the number one culprit of anxiety brought on by emotional causes is stress. The stress may be slight, yet prolonged, or it could be short term but extreme. Either case could cause tension. Anxiety that results from an emotional reason may also be delayed. For example, if you are the victim of a traumatic crime, you may not experience feelings of anxiety immediately after the crime. Those feelings may crop up months or, even years, after the crime has been committed.

Anxiety can even caused by anxiety. For example, if you have one anxiety attack, you may fear another attack, which could increase the amount of fear that you feel, making matters worse. The mind is hugely powerful, and it can work with you and against you.

Anxiety can even occur due to other problems. For example, if you have an asthma attack, you may also suffer with an anxiety attack because you fear not being able to breathe. If you have a heart attack, you may experience an anxiety attack with it because you fear that you are dying. Again, the mind is extremely powerful.

When you suffer from anxiety, you should seek treatment and work with your health care professional to find the cause of your anxiety.

While there are many treatments for anxiety, the best treatment is to know and understand what is causing it.

Anxiety and Depression

Many people don’t realize that anxiety and depression can go hand in hand.

Anxiety and Depression - Hand in HandYou may think that it isn’t possible to feel “anxious” if you are feeling “depressed” or vice versa, but it is entirely possible, and it happens more often than you think. A person may be experiencing prolonged depression that is coupled with feelings of anxiety at certain times or in certain situations. In fact, anxiety can lead to depression, and depression can lead to anxiety.

Would you be surprised to find that 90% of people who suffer from depression also have symptoms of anxiety? Many of these people suffer from General Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. However, you should not assume that you do suffer from GAD if you have symptoms of anxiety and depression at the same time. Only a trained doctor will be able to determine that.

Think about the symptoms of depression, and then note the symptoms of anxiety. Both problems include symptoms of fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and muscle tension, along with other symptoms. So, how can you determine whether you have depression, anxiety, or both? You must visit your doctor and report all of your symptoms to him or her.

Your doctor will note your symptoms and your overall physical condition. He or she will most likely ask questions concerning your personal life to identify what may be causing depression or anxiety. He or she may refer you to a counselor for further diagnosis, as well.

The good news is that both depression and anxiety can be treated, and treatment is available even if you are suffering from both anxiety and depression. The crucial thing is to get treatment as soon as you realize that a problem exists. The sooner you are treated, the sooner you can get back to living your normal life.

Anxiety and Headaches
