Mental Health

Mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a mental disorder, but can also describe persons struggle with health problems.

Indicators of Post Partum Depression

Causes of postpartum depression cannot be isolated.

sadnessPost Partum depression is a form of clinical depression experienced by women following pregnancy. It is differentiated from the frequent experience of the “baby blues” by its tendency to last a month or more after the end of pregnancy and by the severity of its symptoms.

The exact causes of postpartum depression cannot be isolated. Many researchers believe that the condition is spurred by a combination of factors including genetic traits and hormonal shifts in the body. Even though we may not know exactly what causes postpartum depression, recent research has evaluated a number of factors that tend to help in predicting a subsequent case of illness.

Note that these are indicators, or predictors, not causes. Their relationship with Post Partum depression is a matter of correlation, not causation. Nonetheless, they do give us an idea of who is most likely to experience the problem.

One of the strongest predictors is experiencing depression during pregnancy. Other statistically significant indicators include a measurably low sense of self-esteem, having experienced prenatal anxiety, and suffering from other significant life stressors.

This could lead one to conclude that Post Partum depression is most likely to affect those who are already candidates for a depressive disorder or who are already manifesting some of depression’s symptoms.

Other predictors of Post Partum depression include a lack of social support and a poor marital relationship, providing some reason to consider that the nature of one’s life is a key factor. That possibility seems even more likely when one notes that research has also flagged a low socioeconomic status and being a single parent as indicators of Post Partum depression.

Does this mean that everyone with a history of mental illness who happens to be poor and/or single will invariably experience some depression after childbirth? Not at all. Again, these are only predictors – their exact relationship to the illness is impossible to discern. What can be understood, however, is that these traits seem to be present in women who experience a severe and intensified version of the “baby  blues?”

Thus, any pregnant person who sees her current situation as being consistent with those predictors may want to learn more about postnatal depression and how to deal with it effectively. There is some chance that the disorder will never appear, but a life consistent with the predictors is more likely to attract the condition and preparation can help.

In time, the exact causes of the illness may be understood. That would certainly lead to superior treatment methods. Right now, however, we are left with an understanding that many women to experience the condition and that individuals exhibiting certain tendencies and life features are more likely to suffer from it. That evidence may not unlock the secrets of the disease, but it does give us some valuable information to evaluate when considering who is likely to suffer from PPD.

Beyond Bipolar Disorder Videos

Bipolar Disorder Videos Updated Regularly

Comment to the video (What is Borderline Personality Disorder) on the page: Bipolar Disorder Videos

Bordeline Personality DisorderAs said in this video; Borderline Personality Disorder comes particularly together with bipolarity, depression and anxiety. This announcement brings me to another of the videos, where they talk about the types of Bipolar Disorder. They mention 5 types of bipolarity, but Bipolar Disorder is more complex than that.

I have written about earlier on my blog; bipolarity is a combination of several health conditions. In addition to the five types they mention in the video, bipolar people also might be (and often are) suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, depression and anxiety.
(As well as a lot of other mental health medical terms in use – mania, delirium, hypomania etc.)

This brings up the question: are there more than 5 types of bipolarity? All these conditions somehow seem to be connected.

Everybody can be depressed from time to time, so depression as such, isn`t an illness, a disorder or a defect, but both borderline personality and anxiety have their own diagnoses as disorders. If one is diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, then I wonder if Borderline Personality Disorder and Anxiety Disorder also can be considered to be a part of bipolarity.Eternal Conflict

If someone out there can enlighten me (and others) about these issues, please do write on my blog! (Any comment is welcome as long as it`s not written in a “spammed” manner.) 😉

Gust writers are welcome on my blog! (I will check the quality and uniqueness before articles can be published though!) 😉

Anxiety Acupuncture – Fighting Hospital Anxiety

Acupuncture for Parents.

A recent study points toward a new way of fighting hospital anxiety acupuncture. The study used acupuncture around the ears of mothers of children undergoing surgical procedures and discovered that the process not only made things easier for the moms, but for the children, as well.Acupuncture Clinic

A relatively small test group of mothers whose children would be undergoing surgery in the site hospital was given an acupuncture treatment around the ear using small needles. The mothers later reported a significant reduction in their level of anxiety. Acupuncture did not just work for the moms. However, their relative calm and lack of worry had an impact on their children too.

A calm mother, it seems, tends to produce a less anxious child. This certainly appeared to be the case of the kids whose moms had underwent the treatment, they experienced far less anxiety. Acupuncture for their mothers allowed them to have a more relaxing and less stressful experience in the hospital and prior to surgery. Children often have an extremely difficult time, in terms of anxiety, with surgery. They experience all of the fears adults do but without the experience and knowledge that allow older people to approach the situation more calmly and rationally.

Scary Mental HospitaleThis finding is potentially significant for a few reasons. Initially, it demonstrates that there may be another weapon in the war against anxiety. Acupuncture seems to have a real impact on stress levels and holds out a great deal of potential for reducing anxious feelings and worries. The research is confirming the long held beliefs of many in Eastern countries whose civilizations have long practiced acupuncture and consider it a traditional part of their medicine.

Additionally, the surgical procedure can be improved by reducing anxiety.

Acupuncture for the parents made the surgical experience easier for the children. The reduction in pre-procedure stress and usually resulting crying and outbursts allowed those responsible for the children’s care to better concentrate on the surgical procedure and medical matters. Medical professionals could spend less time to take care of people on anxiety and more time on the surgery. Acupuncture for the parents of children slated for surgeries may be a brilliant idea for hospitals everywhere.

Finally, everyone agreed to take away the frightening and trying experience of the medical procedure since this would be a positive thing and, easier for children. If children, by calming parents, can have a less horrifying stay at the hospital and in preparation for surgery, it is beneficial, regardless of whether or not it dramatically assists healthcare providers.

The acupuncture process itself was relatively painless, featuring a handful of truly small needles placed around the ears. Most study participants were surprised that the remarkably small devices were able to have such a significant impact on their mindset and behavior.

The research, which was conducted by a physician at the Yale School of Medicine, shows us that there might be a relatively easy way significantly to reduce hospital waiting room anxiety: Acupuncture.
