Holistic Treatment for Anxiety

Alternative medicine based on evidence?

The scientific community has criticized alternative medicine as being based on misleading statements, quackery, pseudoscience, ant science, fraud, or poor scientific methodology.Critics have said; “there is really no such thing as alternative medicine, just medicine that works and medicine that doesn’t”.

Well, in my humble opinion, as long as there are alternative medicine out there, and it has helped a lot of people – among others a holistic non-chemical treatment for anxiety, why not try?

Melissa OilIf you aren’t keen on the idea of taking prescription drugs that may be addictive for your anxiety, there are other options. Holistic treatment may be what you prefer. Comprehensive treatment is essentially a natural non-chemical treatment for the condition.

Holistic treatment for anxiety starts with eating well. Make sure that you are getting plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods in your diet. Getting enough exercise, and fresh air is also a vital part of holistic anxiety treatment. You need to get outside in the fresh air and walk or do other physical activities that you enjoy at least five times a week, for approximately 30 minutes.

Together, eating right and exercising will help your brain naturally to produce the chemicals that create feelings of calmness and happiness. This alone will take you far in your treatment for anxiety, but you should note that it may take a couple of weeks or so to start feeling the real effects from eating right and exercising.
There are also many useful herbs that will help to put the brain chemistry back in order.

One such herb is lemon balm. Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) is effective in the reduction of stress and helps you to relax. Lavender should also be used. Lavender is used to calm and to support the nervous system, and it will also help you to relax and sleep.Passionflower

Passion flower is another naturally calming herb. This herb literally “takes the edge off,” helps relieve stress and settles a nervous stomach, which is common for someone who suffers from anxiety.

If you are worried that a holistic treatment may not be as effective as chemical treatment, you have no cause to fear. Research has shown that in most cases, holistic treatment for anxiety is just as effective as chemical treatment for anxiety. In some instances, it is even more so.

Obviously, you need to discuss your anxiety with your health care professional and be treated for it, but whether you realize it or not, there are other mental health support sources out there as well.

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America is one such support organization. It was founded in 1980. The purpose of the ADAA is to offer support to patients, health care professionals, and anyone else who is affected by an anxiety disorder. The ADAA has a directory of self-help groups that you will find in your local area.

The Council on Anxiety Disorders is another good organization. It was founded in 1988, and regular meetings are held in Georgia. Here, you will also be able to obtain a listing of local support groups, and you will also receive materials that will aid in helping you to deal with your anxiety, or that of a loved one.

The National Anxiety Foundation is another excellent resource. Through this organization, you will be able to find doctors who treat anxiety, support groups, and anxiety-related information.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) will also be able to help. This organization covers all mental health issues, including anxiety. They will be able to direct you to professional help, group help, provide information, and point you to other needed resources.

Because we live in an information society, where the average person can lay their hands on just about any type of information that they want, patients must start taking a more active role in their own health care and treatment. These organizations will essentially help you to help yourself.

Again, you do need the help of a doctor, but you can also find additional help through the many mental health support organizations that exist as well.

Treatment of Anxiety – Xanax

Many physicians prescribe Xanax to their patients for the treatment of anxiety, as well as for anxiety disorders. Xanax has a generic form called alprazolam, and has been used since it was approved by the FDA in 1981. Today, Xanax XR is also available.

As with most medications, there are potential side effects when taking Xanax. It can cause your motor functions to become impaired while the drug is in your system. You may feel clumsy, become dizzy, or experience headaches and fatigue.

Serious side effects include blurred vision, slurred speech, confusion, personality changes, nightmares, memory loss, incontinence, constipation, nausea, and disorientation. It is rare, but possible, that Xanax could actually increase one’s anxiety.

Those who have a very rare and serious reaction to the medication may also experience nervousness, agitation, insomnia, muscle spasms, and even feelings of rage. If any of these things occurs, it is usually an indication that the dosage prescribed or taken was too high, and the solution is to reduce the dosage.

Xanax for Treatment of Anxiety DisorderXanax can become addictive with long-term use. At the same time, there are those patients who discover that the Xanax no longer works in controlling their anxiety or anxiety symptoms.

Xanax is a controlled drug and must be prescribed by a licensed physician. It is typically not prescribed for those who are under the age of 18. The drug cannot be taken while pregnant or nursing.

Xanax is a good drug for short-term treatment of anxiety, but if an addiction occurs, the withdrawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued from the treatment plan can be fairly severe. Counseling for Anxiety

Counseling is a vital part of treatment for anxiety.

Stress and AnxietyAnxiety is a serious problem, and it does require treatment if it is prolonged. Unfortunately, many people fail to realize that complete anxiety treatment requires medication, as well as counseling. They may visit their medical doctor and get the medication, but fail to follow up with the appropriate counseling. This means that the anxiety is never actually dealt with effectively.

Counseling is an essential part of treatment for anxiety. In fact, the counseling that seems to work best is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. You won’t find yourself in therapy discussing your childhood and bringing up every wrong thing that your parents did. This is not what CBT is about.

CBT is about forming new ways of thinking — or changing your thinking patterns, as well as your own behavior. You can literally change the way that you react to events in your life, and this in turn, will control the anxiety that you experience. It focuses on how you feel about yourself, not on how others have mistreated you or unpleasant things that you’ve done in the past. You don’t have to admit all of your deepest and darkest secrets to your therapist to treat anxiety.

Exposure therapy also works well for those who suffer from anxiety. In this situation, you literally state what your fears are in a fully controlled environment, and you are exposed to that fear. Remember that this is a controlled environment, meaning that the fact that you fear cannot hurt you in this environment, despite the fact that you are exposing yourself to it.

The idea here is that, by exposure, you get a greater sense of control over this thing that you fear — seeing that it isn’t as horrible as you imagined it was. You learn, firsthand, exactly how to deal with the fear that you feel.

Therapy for anxiety is not usually a lifetime thing. In fact, most CBT programs are completed in 12-20 weeks, depending on the extent of anxiety and the patient. CBT can be conducted privately, or with a group of other people who suffer from Anxiety Disorder.

Untreated Anxiety

Untreated anxiety is an extremely real problem.

According to the NIMH, or National Institute of Mental Health, more than 19 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. Unfortunately, a study conducted by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), done in 1999, found that only about one-third of those people seek treatment. Of those who do seek treatment, the stress may be grossly misdiagnosed, and, therefore, not treated properly.

Untreated AnxietyUntreated anxiety is absolutely a real problem — and that question just grows as long as it is left untreated. Anxiety can eventually dominate your life, preventing you from living your life to the fullest potential. Long-term anxiety can even lead to depression or increased anxieties, which in turn will most likely progress to anxiety, or panic attacks.

Anxiety is stress, but it is extreme stress. When the brain is stressed, the immune system does not function properly, and this makes you more subject to illnesses, and will also make it difficult to get over illnesses that you do have. Common problems associated with anxiety include increased blood pressure, digestive problems, stomach problems, and sleep disorders. You may also experience stress related aches and pains, diarrhea, and dizziness.

These are not temporary problems. As long as the anxiety remains untreated, these problems will not only persist — they will expand into even worse mental health problems. Nobody dies from anxiety attacks, but they can certainly die from health problems that are brought on by the stress of anxiety.

Many people don’t seek treatment for anxiety because they feel as it is “normal” and that no treatment is needed. In most cases, anxiety is normal. We all feel anxious when things aren’t going well or when truly awful things happen.

However, no matter what the cause of the anxiety, if it is a long term, and left untreated, the problems that are coming are even worse than the ones that you are experiencing today. Do yourself, your mind and your body a favor — seek treatment!

Anxiety and Depression

Many people don’t realize that anxiety and depression can go hand in hand.

A person may be experiencing prolonged depression that is coupled with feelings of anxiety at certain times or in certain situations. In fact, anxiety can lead to depression, and depression can lead to anxiety.

Would you be surprised to find that 90% of people who suffer from depression also have symptoms of anxiety? Many of these people suffer from General Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. However, you should not assume that you do suffer from GAD if you have symptoms of anxiety and depression at the same time. Only a trained doctor will be able to determine that.

Think about the symptoms of depression, and then note the symptoms of anxiety. Both problems include symptoms of fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and muscle tension, along with other symptoms. So, how can you determine whether you have depression, anxiety, or both? You must visit your doctor and report all of your symptoms to him or her.

Your doctor will note your symptoms and your overall physical condition. He or she will most likely ask questions concerning your personal life to identify what may be causing depression or anxiety. He or she may refer you to a counselor for further diagnosis, as well.

The good news is that both depression and anxiety can be treated, and treatment is available even if you are suffering from both anxiety and depression. The crucial thing is to get treatment as soon as you realize that a problem exists. The sooner you are treated, the sooner you can get back to living your normal life.
