Bipolar II – Really?

Is it Bipolar II – or just plain Bipolar Disorder not yet recognized?

Google “Bipolar” on the “news” tab and see what you find.  It is astounding how many semi-celebrities have come out and said “I have Bipolar Disorder”.  Unfortunately, the story is often about Bipolar II, which somehow makes it “better”.

Bipolar Disorder is still a serious stigma – prevents people from getting jobs and such.  Technically, as Bipolar Disorder is considered a disability, an employer who did not hire or fired an admitted bipolar patient based only on that fact would be in violation of the American Disabilities Act, but few people are willing to go to the carpet on that.  Plus there is the little issue of being “able” to perform one’s job.  I can perform a job if I am taking meds.  If I am off of meds, I become highly unreliable with a lot of other liabilities – risky behavior that I have decided not to discuss.

Only a couple of years ago, I was warned by a well-meaning family member against posting too much on social media about Bipolar Disorder – and this in his mind included “liking” too many Bipolar pages.  He was concerned about my ability to obtain a decent job.  I don’t know if I have a “decent “job today – I have made my own way which works out better for me – no boss to annoy, no dress code, nobody else’s time clock.  For the most part, I don’t worry about social media – I don’t think I will ever have a “real” job again – no more frequent flyer miles for me.

Bipolar 2I was once diagnosed as Bipolar II – but really, both the doctor and the therapist thought differently – they both knew that I had regular Bipolar Disorder but wasn’t ready to accept it.  Actually, I am pretty sure my doctor tricked me into taking Lithium for the first time by telling me that it would help boost my antidepressant activity.

In retrospect, I am astounded that I believed him since I know so much about medication – but I took the medication.  How many of these people really have Bipolar I Disorder and just don’t say so.

It is much easier for people to say and accept that they have Bipolar II.  In my opinion (which is obviously vast and knowledgeable – just kidding, no really), Bipolar II is a way of sliding by the real diagnosis.  As in “I have Bipolar Disorder but not really”.  “I have Bipolar Disorder but I am not crazy”.  “I have Bipolar Disorder but I am not dangerous”.  “I have Bipolar Disorder but I won’t embarrass you”.
When it gets down to it…wasn’t that true for all of us at one time?  Or at least didn’t we believe it at one time?  I still fit some of the criteria – I am “functional”, “productive”, “hypomanic” – except when I am not.

I often confuse my doctor when he asks how it is going by saying “good enough”.  What I mean is that I am not manic exactly, I am not depressed.  Actually it works better for me if I am teetering on the edge of mania.  If I am just crazy enough that I know that I am crazy – then I will keep taking my meds.  Because I forget.

I originally sought treatment for severe depressiondepression bad enough that I had to decide whether to kill myself or study (I had a big exam the next day).  In retrospect, I was actually in a mixed episode with plenty of energy but in a really bad mood.  Oh, and then there was the slight issue of the hypnogogic hallucinations which I denied at the time.  See, even if I know that I have Bipolar DisorderManic Depression – I still forget.

It would be easier for me to say that I have Bipolar Disorder but it is “just” Bipolar II.  I thought that too.

Aromatherapy as Treatment of Depression

We are all affected by sights, sounds, and smells.

That is why aromatherapy is effective for so many different things that we may experience in our lives. It includes physical illnesses as well as mental setbacks, such as depression. In fact, aromatherapy is highly effective in easing the symptoms of depression.

LavenderLavender is one of the most effective scents for the treatment of depression. This scent increases the instance of waves in the back of the head, which promotes relaxation. Jasmine is also another well-known scent, as it increases the example of waves in the front of the head.

However, the waves increased in the back of the head with lavender are alpha waves — for relaxation — while the waves increased in the front of the head are beta waves — for alertness.

Aside from lavender and jasmine, other scents are also useful for various aspects of depression symptoms. These include clary sage (insomnia), basil (fatigue), rose (nervous system), and sandalwood (tension). Other prominent scents that may ease symptoms of depression include chamomile, patchouli, bergamot, rosemary, and geranium.

Essential OilWhile you can use candles for aromatherapy, the ideal method is to use essential oils of the herb scent that you require. Essential oils can be used as diffusers, in baths, massages, or even as perfume or body splashes.

Again, when using scents for aromatherapy, the oils are more effective than candles. These oils can be purchased from health food stores and online sources. In many cases, you will receive a small break on the cost when ordering larger quantities.

While aromatherapy will ease symptoms of depression, it should not replace therapy that is needed to treat depression, and it may not even replace medications used for treatment of depression.

Depression and Exercise

Exercise can, in some cases, eliminate the symptoms associated with depression.

The energy creates more energy – a statement that is proved by science a long time ago.

Take a walk when you start to feel drowsy will perk you up and helps you get through the day without a nap. While this is a significant benefit of exercise, there are, of course, other benefits.

Naturally, you think that exercise is important for weight control, muscle tone, and even bone strength. But, did you know that exercise can also aid in the treatment of depression?

Exercise Improve MoodsWhen we exercise, endorphins are released in the brain. Those endorphins make us feel happy. Note that exercise is not in any way a cure for depression — the depression still needs to be treated by a doctor, and possibly with the help of a therapist, but exercise can lessen, and in some cases eliminate the symptoms associated with depression.

For the relief of depression symptoms, doctors recommend regular exercise for approximately 30 minutes, three to five times a week. You don’t have to go to the gym for a complete workout. Again, just taking a 30-minute walk will do wonders. The important thing is to get the blood flowing through your body.

Naturally, when one is depressed, they don’t feel like exercising, and 30 minutes of exercise may be asking a bit much — at first.
However, even 10 minutes of exercise will improve your mood, although you won’t feel any long-term effects from such a small amount of exercise.

Despite this, if you can’t muster 30 minutes of exercise right out of the gate, start with smaller amounts of exercise time and slowly work your way up to a full 30 minutes.

Not only will exercise improve depression symptoms by releasing endorphins, it will also help you to sleep better at night, which also helps with the treatment of depression.

Treatment of Depression Medication – Paxil

Paxil is one of the most highly prescribed medications for the treatment of depression. It has proven over time to be extremely safe and effective. Over the years, the makers of Paxil have created Paxil CR, or Paxil Controlled Release, which is the preferred Paxil choice of many doctors.

Paxil helps to treat depression that is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, as well as all other depression. Paxil works with neurotransmitters in the brain to adjust the level of serotonin that is being produced.

As with many medications, there are potential side effects. These include dry mouth, diarrhea, sweating, tremors, appetite changes, constipation, nausea, decreased or increased sex drive, insomnia, abnormal vision, drowsiness, and weakness. Paxil is only prescribed for adults aged 18 or older as research has found that many serotonin-producing drugs increase the presence of suicidal tendencies in young people.

Paxil is not addictive; however, your body may react to the discontinuance of the drug, and you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms that include abnormal dreams, agitation, nausea, headache, fatigue, and changes in sleep patterns.

Treatment of DepressionMost doctors will monitor your progress after being taken off Paxil, and may opt to wean the patient off of the medication instead. In most cases, Paxil will not be prescribed if you are pregnant or nursing.

Again, most people really don’t have any trouble with Paxil, and find that it is very effective for the treatment of depression, and all of the symptoms that go along with depression. Paxil is covered by most prescription drug insurance plans and is affordable even without insurance coverage.

If you or a loved one suffers from depression, Paxil is a treatment that should be considered. Discuss this issue with a doctor.

Based on your health history, your doctor may decide that Paxil is not for you. Be sure to give your doctor a complete medical history before being prescribed Paxil.

Drugs, Alcohol, Depression — A Deadly Mixture

Avoid drugs and alcohol completely if you are depressed

Depression is an extremely serious illness that requires treatment. Without treatment, depression can, and often does, lead to suicide or, at the very least, attempted suicide.
Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment and instead turn to “self-medicating” with drugs and alcohol.

People who suffer from depression do not enjoy it. They are not just trying to get attention. They really do want to feel better — unfortunately, however, they can’t see a way to do that. Then, if they use drugs or alcohol, they have a brief period where they are feeling better — while the drugs or alcohol are in effect.

BecDepressed and Drunkause they really do want to feel better, and they have experienced feeling better with the drugs or alcohol, they will often use the drug of booze over and over again to either maintain or re-experience “feeling good again.” Unfortunately, this leads to huge problems.

Obviously, addiction and other health concerns come into play with the use of alcohol or drugs. But these substances can also increase the risk of suicidal attempts — and successes, as well. Alcohol is a depressant — not an antidepressant.

It is true that when one starts drinking, they feel a “buzz” of sorts, but as they continue to drink, the alcohol will actually bring them down even further, from a mental viewpoint. The buzz quickly passes — but when they look back at it, all they either remember or allow themselves to think about is that brief buzzed feeling. The same is true with many drugs.

But once the “buzz” has passed, and the drunkenness or drugged state progresses, the depression actually deepens. In a drunken or drugged state, the person may not be able to see any bit of hope, and they are more likely to try to commit suicide.

If you are depressed, avoid drugs and alcohol completely. Talk to your doctor, and get the rundown on how these substances, as well as other substances, may affect your depression, and hinder your treatment.

Complications Associated with Depression Treatment

These days, the medications used to treat depression are actually remarkably good.

Not only are they effective, but they have proven to be safe, and are even no addictive. Most people have little or no side effects from the medication at all, and if they do experience mild side effects, those effects usually pass rather quickly.

The complications associated with depression treatment don’t actually pertain to the medication used at all — but there are some complications indeed. You see, usually when people experience major depression there is an exceedingly legitimate chance that depression will reoccur later.

Depression Treatment - ComplicationsIn fact, research shows that of everyone who seeks treatment for depression and are able to get past the depression and discontinue the medication — with the approval of their doctor — one-third of those people will experience depression again, often within a year. Furthermore, of those people, approximately half will experience depression again within their lifetime.

Depression also has other effects. There is, of course, a 15% chance of suicide. People who suffer from depression, typically are not as healthy as those who do not, from a physical standpoint. Furthermore, those who suffer from depression are less likely to live through a heart attack or stroke.

This does not mean that you are doomed if you suffer from depression. It is crucial to seek treatment and work closely with your doctor. Counseling should be sought, and should continue even after the depressive episode has passed. Your doctor will work with you, to adjust medication appropriately — and to discontinue the medication when it is not needed. He or she will also help you to be more aware of depression as it starts creeping in.

Studies have shown that the earlier the depression is treated, the sooner it is likely to pass. Therefore, it is vital that you and your doctor stay up to date with your mental and physical state.
