GAD and Women


Studies have shown that while 19 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders each year, of that number, the majority of them are women.

Feeling anxious is quite normal — until and unless it starts interfering with one’s day-to-day life, or preventing one from reaching their goals. In fact, normal anxiety is a contributing factor to helping us get things accomplished — especially in women.

What most people don’t realize is that many women suffer from generalized anxiety disorder. Women are “natural born worriers” for the most part, but there are those women who suffer a bit more than others. Women who suffer from GAD worry about everything, and that fear brings about physical problems, such as headaches, muscle tension, an inability to relax, fatigue, lack of focus, and more.

Would you believe that many of these women first develop GAD during childhood?

It is true — and because of this, they never even realize that there is a problem. In fact, they often will assume that everyone worries as much as they do. It’s completely “normal” as far as they are concerned, because it has always been a part of their lives. Most of these women cope very well with the anxiety — simply because they are used to it.

Then there are those who have never suffered from GAD, and actually never have had worried more than anyone else about things. Suddenly, they are overwhelmed with anxious feelings. And because this is new, and they are not used to it, it becomes a huge thing to worry about — on top of whatever else they may be worrying about.

Often, for women, the cause of the anxiety in this situation is hormonal changes. Estrogen and progesterone levels change over time. In fact, a woman is likely to experience more anxiety during PMS, perimenopause, menopause, and even pregnancy. Estrogen affects the levels of serotonin that the brain is producing. This serotonin gives us our “sense of well-being.”

For lots of women, the anxiety passes as either time or medication puts the hormone levels back into check. Other women may discover that they have been suffering from GAD for most of their lives, with the change in hormone levels drastically elevating the condition.

In any case, there is treatment and help available. You can go through life without so much worry and anxiety.

Different Types of Anxiety

There are different types of anxiety

When you think about anxiety, you may not realize that there are different types of anxiety. The most common types of anxiety include social anxiety, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and generalized anxiety. So, what do they all mean?

Social Anxiety is anxiety or feelings of anxiety that occur either in a social situation, or in anticipation of a social situation. If social anxiety is not effectively dealt with, it can become a problem. Especially if it allows persons suffering from anxiety attacks are allowed to put themselves in feared social situations.

Panic Disorder exists when a person suffers from panic attacks or from feelings of intense fear for no obvious reason. The symptoms of a panic attack may be extremely tough, and the person may even think that they have a heart attack.
It is essential to note that one cannot die from a panic attack, even though they may feel that they are actually dying. With panic disorder, one might fear having a panic attack to the point of causing one.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSDPost Traumatic Stress Disorder occurs when one has experienced something traumatic. This usually does not happen immediately after the event. It could happen days, weeks, months, or even years after the trauma has been experienced. The person may experience flashbacks of trauma, and this can prevent one from living a normal life.

Phobias involve many different things. One might fear spiders, snakes, water, heights, driving, or any number of things. The fear that one feels, however, is not normal in that it is often highly elaborate. This does not mean that the person is exaggerating the fear that they feel. In fact, the fear that they feel is absolutely real — to them.
Phobias tend to make people avoid things in life that they may otherwise enjoy. For example, one might fear spiders to the extent that they would never take a walk on a wooded path, where spiders might exist.

Finally, we have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. Some people feel that this is what is diagnosed when there is no other cause for anxiety found; however, that is not the case. GAD occurs when one is constantly worried about every aspect of their life. It can be seriously disabling. People who suffer from GAD worry about themselves, their family, their friends, and the whole world.

If you’ve been having feelings of anxiety or anxiety attacks, it is necessary to seek treatment and to determine what type of anxiety you have, so the cause can be found, and treatment can be administered.

Anxiety and Depression

Many people don’t realize that anxiety and depression can go hand in hand.

Anxiety and Depression - Hand in HandYou may think that it isn’t possible to feel “anxious” if you are feeling “depressed” or vice versa, but it is entirely possible, and it happens more often than you think. A person may be experiencing prolonged depression that is coupled with feelings of anxiety at certain times or in certain situations. In fact, anxiety can lead to depression, and depression can lead to anxiety.

Would you be surprised to find that 90% of people who suffer from depression also have symptoms of anxiety? Many of these people suffer from General Anxiety Disorder, or GAD. However, you should not assume that you do suffer from GAD if you have symptoms of anxiety and depression at the same time. Only a trained doctor will be able to determine that.

Think about the symptoms of depression, and then note the symptoms of anxiety. Both problems include symptoms of fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and muscle tension, along with other symptoms. So, how can you determine whether you have depression, anxiety, or both? You must visit your doctor and report all of your symptoms to him or her.

Your doctor will note your symptoms and your overall physical condition. He or she will most likely ask questions concerning your personal life to identify what may be causing depression or anxiety. He or she may refer you to a counselor for further diagnosis, as well.

The good news is that both depression and anxiety can be treated, and treatment is available even if you are suffering from both anxiety and depression. The crucial thing is to get treatment as soon as you realize that a problem exists. The sooner you are treated, the sooner you can get back to living your normal life.

Everybody worries from time to time, but a person worrying extends to interrupt daily life and cause debilitating anxiety, those persons may have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or, in short – GAD. While people with GAD may start out by worrying about everyday things, this disorder can easily take over people’s life and be the cause other medical problems. If one thinks they have GAD, one should see a doctor immediately and talk about various treatment options.

General Anxiety DisorderPeople with GAD worry about everyday things like money, health, relationships, and jobs. It is normal to worry about these things, even on a daily basis. Such as; squeamishness, muscle tension, sleeping problems, exhaustion, breathing difficulties, changes in appetite, sweating or hot flashes, headache and restlessness. Medical professionals do not yet know what causes GAD. Treatment and diagnosis can, therefore, sometimes be difficult. Treatment that works well can than include both therapy and medication. Every person worries in a different way, so every person needs different treatment, as well. To find the best form of medical treatment for his or hers GAD situations one should always work together with a doctor. Work with one`s own body`s wants and needs.

No matter why people have developed GAD, they can get help. Most people suffering from GAD do not know that they can be helped.

If people find themself constantly consumed with worries, they should talk to a doctor immediately to find out how medical treatment can help.
One may feel as though there is always something to worry about – from having enough money to pay for bills to getting that job promotion. In a normal life, one may think about these things at least once or twice a day.
A doctor can help achieve this, even if one has GAD.
