Suicide is not a weak or cowardly person that takes the lightweight solution. Suicide is a result of a disease called depression. With increased knowledge, understanding, with an increased understanding the shame disappears.

She is not only a great artist, but a woman with courage, rant, empathy and honesty. She is a role model for all girls who grow up in the day, and a daughter-in-law all mothers want.

But what about the ordinary man or lady in the street that does not have any film career behind him or her, that is not a familiar face among the population?

To expect a person that we have never heard of, or meant something about, should open and stand naked in front of a whole country and tell about his (or her) inner hell, is a lot to claim. But it is needed to break down the taboo by having it painful.

The constant negativity is not something a depressed person has decided to have, but the result of the disorder depression.

And when it`s downward spiral no end will take, suicide thoughts come.
Suicide is not a selfish act!

Not Like in the Movies

People with cancer can also have good times, even though the physical pain is present. I think some program for people with a
mental disorder would have the same effect. It would scare away all horror stories about the psychiatric department is a “mad house” and that people with furthering psychosis are crazy.

It is no secret that people who have never experienced or seen mentally ill people at close range only refer to what they have seen the movie or even imagined. All based on the little knowledge they have about what a mental disorder is.

And just this little knowledge people who do not have experienced mental illness is sitting inside with, is crucial to do something about. With increased knowledge comes understanding. And with understanding it will be easier to deal with the shame for the mentally ill, and openness will appear.

A Taboos’ Disease

The question is how to reach out with this knowledge.

A solution could be to have designated subjects in high school that was mandatory for all Mental Disorder Taboostudents where they taught young people about what a mental disorder is. Inform about why it occurs, how to help people who suffer and how one can help themselves and seek help if they should be hit by a mental disorder.

A depression is not a bad day. A depression is not whining over a couple of weeks.
Depression is a disease in the head. A disease in the same line as cancer and other diseases that are not equally taboo’s.
If one is in a state of depression, one loses oneself? It can feel as if life is completely meaningless. One can’t get out of bed. Curtains are pulled down. Darkness – a depressive person wants the darkness.

SSRIs – Not a Pill of “Happiness”

The balance in the brain is gone, and it is here the anti-depressive pills come into the picture – a means to restore balance in the brain. But it is not a “pill of happiness“.

Pills don`t make you happy automatically. Antidepressant does only half the job. The psychologist can do something, your friends and family also, but the rest is up to the depressed him or herself.

The depressed must have determination of another world and a false belief that everything is going to be OK. For the depressed it never feels like anything it’s ever going to be OK again. The depressed will get a different view of the world than before, and the pain feels like unbearable.

We Must Try to Understand Mental Disorder!

Depression in Children

It may not seem possible, and most people don’t want to think about depression in children.

Different from developmental disorders such as ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders and different from mental disorders such as Schizophrenia, which have obvious symptoms, Depression can occur in children.

Childhood DepressionUp until about 20 years ago, depression in children wasn’t widely recognized.  It wasn’t that the depression didn’t exist; it was undoubtedly just that we didn’t know about it.  Two decades ago, even if the child was aware that “something” was wrong, the parents, teachers, and other adults were likely to dismiss it as a “stage” or “phase” that the child was going through.

There were several reasons for that way of thinking, such as:

  • A belief that children didn’t get depression – adolescents were dismissed as “moody,” younger children were dismissed as “difficult.”
  • Medication available for depression wasn’t appropriate for children due to severe side effects.  Newer antidepressants were not available until Prozac was approved in 1988 for adults.  These medications known as “serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors” (SSRIs) were not approved for children until 2002 and to date, only Prozac is recommended for depression in children though Zoloft and Luvox may be used for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in children.
  • The long-term effects of depression were not yet known.  Depression at any age can contribute to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Today, we recognize childhood depression.  About 11 percent of children have experienced at least one episode of childhood depression before the age of 18, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Normal behavior can certainly vary from child to child and from age to age – as children are prone to “stages” that they will grow out of.  But if a child has an extended period of depression – it is something that should be properly addressed. Such serious issues should not be taken lightly.

Juveniles (those up to age 17) often have different symptoms of depression than those common in adults.  Children with depression may be excessively sad and lethargic, but depression may also show as:

  • Complaints of illness
  • Refusal to go to school
  • Clinging to a parent or caregiver
  • Excessive worrying
  • Sulking
  • Grouchiness
  • Anxiety
  • Acting out at school
  • Excessive negativeness
  • Feelings of being misunderstood

Depressed FeelingsThese symptoms are occasionally experienced by most children as they are growing up, but when symptoms persist for several months or interrupt normal activities and development, more investigation is needed.  One needs to find out what the cause may be.  If a child is being bullied – he or she may not want to go to school.  If a child complains of illness – it may truly be sick.  On the other hand if these events occur over and over, you need to discuss the problem with a doctor.  You may also need to see a child psychiatrist or psychologist.  In some cases, therapy may be warranted but in other cases, the child may benefit from medication suitable for depression.

In any event, you should not ignore symptoms of depression or any other mental illness signs – but investigate them.  It may be that your child is “going through a stage”, but it may be more serious.

Stress Management Ideas

Stress management isn’t as hard as it may actually appear.

However, we can’t accept this next point enough.  If you believe you’ve too much stress in your life, it might be helpful for you to talk with your local mental health connection, doctor or spiritual advisor. Because responses to stress may be a factor in depression, anxiety and other disorders like bipolarity or borderline personality disorder, they might suggest that you visit with a qualified counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, or other.
I don’t want to present myself as a medical professional. All I want to do is give you a few tools to apply you in life to help you better cope with those matters that make us overwhelmed and feel out of control.

You might also want to check into time management tools in order to do away with some of your stressors. When we feel like we don’t have enough time to do the matters that need to be done, that brings on more stress and may lead to anxiety. Believe me, you don’t want that!

Stress management ideas are easy cost effective techniques effectively to check stress. They may be practiced anyplace and at any time.  Well, nearly!
If you feel you’re in need of help, don’t hesitate. You may not be correct always.  The cause of your stress may be for no reason at all.

But it may be physical in its origins.  Somebody else may be able to solve it easily. Comprehend your limitations and it may relieve stress to a great extent.

I like that sentence. I`ve always been fond of alliteration. For those not familiar with the term, alliteration is a literary device which means “the repetition of consonants.” Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. That’s heavy alliteration. I know because I take writing seriously. Probably a little too seriously.

I use apostrophes when I text; capitalize proper nouns on my grocery list; and edit my Facebook posts for style, usage, and clarity. I craft each and every thing that I write very carefully, so that each time I write anything, I get better at it.

OK. I’m gonna go ahead and brag. I’m a pretty damn good writer. It took Stephen King eight years to sell his first story. Me? It only took me ONE. Now… I’m nowhere near as rich or successful as he is—yet—but because I AM a good writer, I thought this would be the perfect way to segue into another myth.

Bipolar Myth #4 – People with bipolar disorder are limited.

Mentally IllThere are times when bipolar disorder can be crippling. There are days when I’m too depressed to write anything, but it isn’t always like that. Keep in mind, bipolar disorder has an upside, too.

That’s another literary device: the pun. 😉

People with bipolar disorder aren’t always depressed. When we’re on the upswing, we’re filled with boundless energy. We need less sleep. We can accomplish a great deal of work. Ideas come whizzing into our heads at the speed of light. We can be sharp, witty, and very charismatic.

Speaking of both charisma and light speed… know who else is bipolar? Actress Carrie Fisher. That’s right. PRINCESS LEIA IS BIPOLAR. Bipolar disorder doesn’t seem to limit her, does it? She’s an American icon! And she’s not the only one.

Linda Hamilton? Yup. Earth is safe from Terminator robots thanks to this bipolar actress.

Richard Dreyfuss? Jaws, American Graffiti, Close Encounters, Academy Awards = YES. Limited = NO.

It’s not just actors, either. Congressman Pat Kennedy, artist Jackson Pollock, and singer Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots are also bipolar. There are so many success stories that I could fill DOZENS of articles just listing them all. If you want to know more, Google “famous bipolar people.” You might also want to grab a cup of coffee. You’ll be reading for a while.

And if you want to read something written BY someone with bipolar disorder aside from me, you might be reading for a very, very long time. In Kay Redfield Jameson’s book Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, you’ll find a list of authors and poets believed to have been bipolar. Want to know who’s on it? Take a college literature class. Pretty much anyone your teacher assigns you to read. That’s who’s on it.

And by the way, it’s not Ms. Kay Redfield Jameson, it’s Dr. Kay Redfield Jameson. She’s a clinical psychologist, so she probably knows what she’s talking about. Guess what? She’s also bipolar. Run for the hills, folks! The loonies have taken over the bin!

People with bipolar disorder can achieve great things, so please don’t make it harder for us by discriminating against us. You hurt us AND you hurt yourselves by not taking advantage of the enormous amounts of talent and drive many of us possess. Also, you might piss off Linda Hamilton. She kicked the Terminator’s butt, ya know.
