Intermittent Explosive Disorder – More Than Just Anger

Intermittent Hulk Explosive DisorderProbably everyone knows that teenage boy (or girl) who punched a hole through the wall.  Perhaps for some, this became a regular pattern of behavior during adolescence but most of those teenagers outgrew it.  In fact, at least one-quarter of teenage boys has done something dumb like punching a wall.

One boy I knew in high school even broke his hand by punching the roof of his car, and some boys were routinely doing stupid stuff.  Despite that, all of it was teenage angst and changes that can be attributed to the massive amounts of testosterone flowing through the male adolescent body – none of them had intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder is worse than punching a hole through a wall.

It typically is first identified in the early teens – but can be seen much earlier in some cases.    In order to be actually characterized as intermittent explosive disorder, an individual must have had three episodes of explosive behavior that is severely out of proportion to the stressor.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder HulkinsectThey must have broken or smashed something that is monetarily valuable (more than a few dollars), physically attacked or made explicit threats to attack someone with the intent of causing harm.  If these three episodes occur within the space of 12 months, the disorder is considered to be more severe.

Here is the catch.

How do you distinguish between IED, average – though extreme teenage behavior and other psychiatric conditions?  It turns out that IED is probably a diagnosis of “if nothing else fits” as other psychiatric disorders certainly overlap with similar symptoms – and you have to rule out the adolescent hormone issue.

Bipolar disorder may cause outbursts of extreme anger and agitation, Borderline personality disorder may cause outbreaks, ADHD patients can exhibit a severe lack of self-control, and drug abuse is always a potential cause.  Even though those diseases may cause IED-like events, a sustained behavior pattern is something to address.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder WarningA recent study reported by the National Institutes of Health shows that IED can actually affect up to 4 percent of adults and lead to an estimated 43 attacks over a lifespan.  The disorder may also increase that chance of depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.  People with IED have an obvious increased risk of legal trouble, financial difficulties, and divorce – that’s a no-brainer.

So the biggest problem for mental health professionals, like many other disorders, is to untangle all of the information leading in and out with a mix of behaviors and a mix of causes.  What came first – the chicken or the egg?  What came first – the drug abuse or the anger?  Which illness is more important – bipolar disorder or the IED?

One of the biggest clues may be in examining (or better, paying attention to) behavior that occurs before puberty.  In other words: What came first – the behavior or puberty?  Clearly if the behavior started before puberty, there was and is an issue.  If the behavior begins during adolescence – you have to wait (and hope) to see if the behavior goes away once the hormones are settled.

IED is not a simple diagnosis.

It requires a careful examination of an entire psychiatric and behavioral history – and the “ruling out” of a lot of other disorders that may be to blame.  Unfortunately, in the end – unless an underlying cause can be found, there is no medicationAnger management and cognitive behavioral therapy are likely the only answer – minimization of harm, not very satisfactory if it was your car window that got smashed in a fit of rage.

We appear to have entered the Age of anxiousness…

We’re living in extremely trying, and hard times and matters don’t seem to be getting any easier. Occasionally life may seem terribly painful and unjust, yet for some reason we manage to battle on, daily, hoping and praying that matters will soon get better.

The world seems to be a more stressful, crazier and less settled place to live in. Nothing appears safe any longer. Millions of individuals are in record levels of debt. Several are losing their jobs, their homes, their wellness and occasionally even their sanity. Bipolarity, depression and anxiety, seams to have become a way of life for way too many individuals.

Many problemsWe appear to have entered the Age of anxiousness. The ceaseless stress and doubts of living in the 21st century have for sure taken their toll. Switch on the news or open a paper and we’re bombarded with distressing images and stories. We start to wonder if we’re safe anyplace. In this, the info age, never before have we had such access to so much information.

Another stressor is the economic system. A lot of Americans are in debt and so is our country. Lofty gas prices, exorbitant housing costs, even the cost of food has sent a lot of Americans to work in jobs that are disappointing and frustrating. They work these jobs as they require a paycheck.

Now, instead of work in a dream career, it’s more crucial to bring home the bacon.

Having more women in the workplace adds to the tension. Numerous women feel they have to be everything to everybody, and that includes a paycheck earner, home keeper, mother, wife, daughter, and sibling. The only trouble with that is a few women just don`t make any time for themselves, therefore, contributing to their stress levels representing an all-time high.

Even youngsters may feel the pressure of stress and anxiety. Adolescents who want to go to college discover themselves pushing themselves during their studies to attempt and get scholarships so they may attend schools that have ever increased tuition prices.

On top of all that, they discover themselves having to hold down part- time jobs to make money for extras that their parents can no more afford. Add peer pressure into the mixture and you’ve got a veritable pressure cooker! Cells, internet, palm pilots, blackberries, and i-pods – we’re always on the go and forever approachable.  We don’t make time to unwind and enjoy life any longer. Why not? We surely should!

If stress is induced by us not feeling in control of a state of affairs, the answer is to attempt and reverse this, and find that control.

The good news is: you are able to! You’ve everything inside you that you require to overcome your stress and the accompanying anxiety. The issue is, as we feel so out of control at the time, that we often don’t realize it. But the tools are there you simply have to use them.

Powerful Tips To Help Manage Everyday Stress

Often times stress will manifest when we carry over yesterday`s concerns into our present day concerns. An accumulation will almost always end up in a high stress level. Therefore, we must be able to “dump” all of our problems from the previous day or days and concentrate wholly on our today.

So here are three stress busting tips for you:

– Stress Busting Tip #1

Resolve right now to release every thought from yesterday and be only mindful of the now…. This thought only…This Tunnel brainbreath…This moment. Take in three very deep breaths and slowly release each one.

At the same time feel each and every concern, each and every problem, and each and every unresolved moment, begin to dissolve. You can deal with them at a later time. For now, you are only to be in this very moment.

Now go to your inner quiet place. Go deep inside to a place where you feel that you are at peace and then just relax and breathe in deeply and enjoy the feeling of being at one and at peace within yourself.

Use this special time and place to be calm. Free your mind and body of all worry, all regret, all disappointment, all anger and grief.

– Stress Busting Tip #2

Next, think of one particular act, such as rocking your baby, taking a quick stroll, raking the leaves, and do that one simple thing. All the while, your mind is quiet and calm, and you are within in your particular place.

Practice this act of quiet and calm each day and you will see that you will accomplish so much more. At the first sign of being stressed, go back to this mindful, quiet place and start all over again until you have reached your inner place of calm.

Mental HealthThe very best thing that you can do for yourself is to eat, drink and rest – to your health!

Stress is easily brought on by not eating and drinking properly. When you don’t get the number of hours of sleep that you need each night, you are only setting yourself up for additional stress.

Limit the amount of salt, sugar, caffeine and alcohol in your diet. Drink plenty of clean, pure water each day and do at least moderate exercise each day. This will breathe new life into your skin, hair and will nourish all of your vital organs.

Take time to breathe properly! Take deep belly breathes to send pure oxygen to all of your body. Laugh and then laugh some more. It is food for the soul! Spend time doing the things that please you most. Engage in healthy and fulfilling relationships and work on problems that would erode the closeness that you have with someone special.

When we are content and living a balanced life everyday stresses seem to pale in comparison. We are better equipped to deal with the unexpected.

You can take control today! Isolate only one particular stressor in your life and then work on it until you regain control. At the very least, have some new hope!
