Managing Your Stress Levels

Stress can be the cause of many issues, but at the same time is a result of your actions and your environment.

Let’s explain this in a simpler way.

Over a period, you start always to feel tired and worn out. You can’t put your finger on the reason, but you notice that your energy levels are down, and  that you just can’t sleep properly. This is a result of stress.

Your increased stress levels, is the same things that allowed you to get run down. Because you are feeling tired, you do not handle situations as well as you usually would. Getting enough rest is a key to managing your stress levels.
Stressors are items in your environment that cause you to feel stressed out. They add to your tiredness and drain your body of energy. This is a vicious circle that becomes a never ending one.

To manage your stress you need to get enough sleep, and learn how to relax your body. How many times have you stayed up at night, just because you can’t get certain things out of your mind? These are your stressors – the things you have to learn to let go off.

Practical ways to manage stress include listening to soothing music. Soothing music can be especially helpful if you have trouble falling asleep. Turn off all lights but a candle light in your bedroom, and listen to some soft music, and then set the radio or disc player to auto shut, off after about an hour.

Another great way of learning how to relax your body is to soak in a hot bath, or to take a warm shower. Going for a massage can help to; this is great if your muscles feel stiff and knotted.

Your stress levels can also be kept down getting enough exercises on a regular basis. A particularly useful way for helping you relax, and sleep better at night, is exercise, such as yoga, walking and swimming.

To disallow stress to have you running around in circles is your goal. If your stress levels are super high then look for a reason, then take action to minimize your levels. At work, you may have too much on your plate – or you may find that you never spend any time on yourself.

Your family needs you to stay healthy, and remember you are important to them. It is possible to find ways to manage your stress, and keep those levels at bay.

Stop the things that allowed you to get run down, and gave you increased stress levels.

Depression – When to Seek Help

Some level of depression is perfectly normal and does not require treatment

Sad and Depressed GirlWe all feel a little down or a little “blue” from time to time. We all have life events that will make us feel very sad as well, such as the loss of a loved one, the breakup of a relationship, financial difficulties, etc.

In most cases, however, these down periods are temporary. At what point, however, should you seek help for your depression? While people feel depression in different ways, and to different extents, there are specific warning signs that one should look for when determining whether or not they actually need treatment or not.

First, if your depression has lasted for more than a period of two weeks, you most likely need to seek treatment. Make an appointment with your medical doctor for a checkup, and discuss your feelings with him. He will most likely perform a physical exam to determine if there is a physical cause for those feelings, and he will also ask about your life events and current stressors.

Other than seeking help if the sadness lasts for more than two weeks, another sign that help is needed — immediately — is if you are having suicidal thoughts, or if you have already attempted suicide.
Do not wait to seek treatment. Contact your doctor, or call a suicide hotline for immediate help!

Feeling HopelessEven if depression is temporary, all of the other symptoms of depression are normal — except for the two discussed above. You may have a change in sleeping and eating patterns, you may feel like everything is hopeless. You may have the fatigue and the aches and the pains.

But again, if those symptoms do not go away within two weeks, or you feel suicidal, treatment is needed.

In many cases, a medical doctor can treat you for the depression, depending on the cause and the severity of your mental state. The important thing is to seek the help and to be as honest with your doctor as possible — whether your doctor is a therapist or not, he (or she) must still keep all conversations with you in confidence.

When should one seek help in cases of depression?

Understanding Mental Illness and Diagnosis

Many people are confused by mental illness and many will claim that they simply do not exist.

However, every day there are counselors who are diagnosing people as having a mental illness conditions. The disease is difficult to determine because of this, whether or not a diagnosis is correct. Also because of this, there are many controversies surrounding these conditions.

Mental health is essential for everyday life. Most people are fit to go through life without glitches in their mental activity, but others seem to have constant interruptions. It`s these interruptions that show us that there is something going wrong in the brain of these individuals and that there is an existing problem.

To understand interruptions that occur in the brain we need to look at different diagnoses and symptoms. We could use bipolar depression for this example. Bipolarity is one of the most common disorders diagnosed in today`s society. In fact, you probably know someone with bipolar depression you just don`t know that they have it. Bipolar disorder is extremely common, but many people do not fully understand the condition.

Bipolar is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Meaning; the brain is denied of vital nutrients that it needs to maintain a stable mindset. Since lots of people are diagnosed bipolar, they do not have their whole life experiences taken into consideration; this can be an enormous problem for them.

We all experience stress, trauma and excitement in our lives. However, not everybody deals with these stressors the same way as somebody else would do. No one should be expected to cope with such stressors the same way as everybody else would do. There is a process that takes place that brings on the condition of bipolar depression.

The first thing we must consider is that all have some “triggers” in life. That triggers might be traumatic events that occur in one’s life. Now, everybody deals with these differently.

Some people will react negatively, and others ignore. Those individuals who ignore these issues are generally not hearing the messages in between. This is how we can separate a mentally ill mind from a so called “normal” way of thinking.

The mentally ill mind tends to consume everything in life that is said. They get it all, and they fell all of that process in their heads until this begins to cause confusion. The “normal” mind tends to listen only to what it wants to listen to, and they do not have these conflicting thoughts to cause the mental confusion.

To better understand this process, it helps also to understand cognitive mental health disorders and how these are related to the confusion that occurs in the mind.
